Though “fun” as a concept “fun” may be the same for everyone, young or old, what defines “fun” is certainly a matter of personal taste, experience, and maturity.
Here are some great and fun ideas for seniors to try.
Board Games
Many board games to choose from that it’s almost impossible to narrow the selection down to suit every taste and preference, but suffice to say, board games give seniors a reason for getting around with their loved ones and talk or just have fun playing! Wordplay games include Bananagrams or Scrabble which are popular favorites along with Monopoly or Scattergories which are fast-paced and focused on strategy. It would be best if you chose a board game that has pieces that are easy for everyone to grasp, even those with motor impairments. Also, pick a game everyone in your group is likely to enjoy (one that’s not too difficult but not too challenging for all who will be playing).
Art/Drawing/Painting
If you’ve yet to pick up either a pencil or paintbrush to make a work of artwork, it’s never too for you to give it a go. Many older people over the years have discovered hidden talents that they were unable to when they were young. Grandma Moses, for example, revolutionized the art world by taking up painting in her late 70s, to illustrate her childhood living on the farm. After a lifetime of drawing, Paul Cezanne didn’t have any art success until his 50s or 60s and the artist Bill Traylor started sketching when his home was abandoned at 85. He produced over 1,000 pieces of art during his lifetime.

Journaling/Writing
There are a variety of activities similar to art and writing that almost require a seasoned or at a minimum, mature eye or voice to communicate something valuable to the rest of humanity. A number of well-known, extremely successful authors didn’t even begin their writing careers until they reached their 60s or beyond, therefore if you’ve never attempted to use pen and paper and create something for people else to read, it’s fine.
Laura Ingalls Wilder is a popular author who didn’t begin recording her tales in writing until she was 65 years old. Frank McCourt didn’t record his memories of growing up as an unemployed youth until he reached his age. If you have something to share and you’re looking for a way to tell it, then it’s probably appropriate to put it on paper. Just write it down for fun, begin a blog or you could even decide to publish your work.
