SPEARFISHING DESTINATIONS AROUND THE WORLD

eventJune 29, 2022 By Peyton Peterson

Are you planning to go fishing while traveling?

People have been using spears in the pursuit of fish from before the beginning of the human race. The oldest official record dates to the year 16,000 and is located in Cosquer Cave in France, which has artwork of Harpooned seals.

There is something special about techniques for hunting that were employed many thousands of years ago, and continue to be used today.

The Scottish novelist John Buchan once said, “The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.”

This “charm” that Buchan talks about is experienced ten times over by those who venture out from the norm of fishing and decide to go fishing with spears. Make sure you have the best spearfishing equipment and you are guaranteed to have a great time.

Click here to read our list of the top places you should go to experience the thrills of spearfishing.

THE FLORIDA KEYS Each year, the grouper season starts on the first of May. It draws people who love spearfishing from all over the globe. It’s also the perfect moment to spot mahi-mahi also known as dolphinfish, and the oceans are filled with life. The Keys are the ideal spot for any experience level, with plenty of shallower areas to explore more advanced places to test your abilities. No matter whether you’d like to free dive or snorkel, or scuba dive. There’s something to suit everyone at Keys of the Florida Keys. It’s hard to beat an apple or key lime pie to celebrate a great catch. Florida does have rules concerning what you can and should not catch, so make sure to read up before you go.

JAPAN A lot of the same species of giant fish through the waters around Bali are also found in Japan. In addition to that, you’ll also see Bonito, Japanese yellowtail, snapper, amberjack, and horse mackerel, along with a diverse variety of marine life. Japanese residents are specialists in fish, with their knowledge of sushi spanning several hundred years. For being a pretty small island, Japan makes up 15 percent of the world’s fish caught. The coasts that run between Okinawa, as well as Zamami Island, are both prime places to fish for spears. Spearfishing and freediving have an extensive history in Japan. In fact, there is a long-standing tradition of women divers, also known as Ama. They have been freediving for abalone, lobsters, and sea urchins since the beginning of the 1700s. Despite the threats to the environment from overfishing, Ama remains at it even today.

HAWAII Another place with deep traditional and traditional spearfishing ties is the islands of Hawaii. If you’ve had the opportunity to experience spears of Hawaiian-type sling spear also known as the pole spear then you’ve probably got an idea of what avid spearos Hawaiians are. Historically, Lawai’a was the best-known spearfishers of the community, and they would pass down their skills to the younger generation of Lawai’a. But spearfishing is alive and well. There’s plenty of ono, mahi-mahi, ahi, billfish, and barracuda that swim in the Hawaiian seas. This is why the restaurants in Hawaii offer such fantastic seafood. Even though scuba fishing isn’t permitted in the western part of Hawaii but there’s many excellent spots to go to. For one thing, there are eight different islands that comprise Hawaii There’s plenty to choose from.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA The Pacific Halibut that is found all along the shores of California is a spearfisher’s dream. As the largest flatfish in the entire world, these flatfish could be your individual Moby Dick. This year, a fisherman caught a Pacific Halibut that weighed 482 pounds. (And this isn’t a typo – it was 482 pounds. This is two Brett Favres, plus some.) You can pretty much find these monsters across the entire coast, however, if you have to pick just one, San Diego is known as a fishing paradise. For such a big payoff it’s possible that you’ll need to put in some extra effort though. Pacific Halibut are famous for fighting an aggressive fight when caught, therefore, you may need to bring a friend along when you go on this particular expedition. There are a lot of other species of fish in the Golden State, including halibut as well as white and striped bass, red snapper sheephead yellowtail, barracuda, and Bonita.
