Agency vs. “Un-Agency”: How to Tell Who’s Really Going to Do the Work

eventOctober 9, 2026 By Peyton Peterson

You sit through the pitch. The senior strategist is sharp, the case studies are impressive, and the deck looks great. Then you sign, and you never see that strategist again. Your account gets handed to someone two years out of college, the work gets farmed out to freelancers you’ve never met, and your monthly report is a pile of numbers nobody can explain. Sound familiar? It’s the oldest trick in the agency playbook, and it’s exactly why we stopped calling ourselves one.

Four Questions That Reveal Who’s Actually Doing the Work

The difference between a traditional agency and an Un-Agency isn’t the service menu. Everybody offers SEO, social, video, and a website. The real difference is who shows up after the contract is signed. Before you hire anyone, ask these questions, and pay close attention to how fast and how plainly they answer. A team that does its own work is proud to tell you exactly how it gets done. A team that doesn’t will change the subject.

Start with the obvious one: who will actually be working on my account, by name? If the answer is “our team,” keep digging. Next, ask whether any of the work gets outsourced or white-labeled. Plenty of agencies resell another company’s output with their own logo slapped on top. Then ask how many layers sit between you and the person doing the work. Every account manager in the middle is one more game of telephone, and one more line on your invoice. Straight answers here are a good sign. Vague ones are a warning.

Finally, ask what happens when something goes wrong, and who picks up the phone to explain it. Nowhere does this matter more than with reputation management services in New Jersey, where a slow, faceless reply to a bad review can do more damage than the review itself. The right partner owns the bad months just as loudly as the good ones, and doesn’t bury them on slide fourteen.

Being an Un-Agency isn’t a slogan. It means the people you meet are the people doing the work, from the first strategy call to the final edit. No hand-offs, no mystery subcontractors, no padding the retainer with meetings about meetings. We’ve worked this way since 1985, and some of our clients have stayed with us for twenty years because of it. If you’re tired of wondering who’s really behind your marketing, come meet the people who will actually do it. You’ll see us on day one, and you’ll still see us on day one thousand.
